Los chicos tienen ahora un proyecto de comprar y poner a funcionar una imprenta del barrio de Gracia en donde ellos están ubicados que está a punto de cerrar!!! es muy fácil ayudarlos, sólo tienen que ir a este link y aportar lo que quieran!

Como nunca había tenido experiencia con este tipo de máquinas, y no tenía idea de como funcionaban, les pedí el favor de que me ayudaran a hacer unas tarjetitas personales de picnic para aprender y experimentar, el resultado: una noche de muchas conversaciones deliciosas, pizza, trasnocho, mucho aprendizaje tipográfico, pero sobre todo mucha felicidad!

A couple of months ago I was passing through Barcelona and had the opportunity of visiting Todojunto, a delicious place where all sorts of things happen like: beautiful designs coming to life, great ideas cooking, fanzines are collected, art is produced and letterpress is used and appreciated.

The guys at Todojunto have a project that involves rescuing a lovely letterpress small business that is just around the corner from their studio in Gracia (the traditional Barcelona neighborhood where they are located) and it’s really easy to help them, you just have to visit this link and donate whatever you want!

Since I had no idea how a letterpress machine worked, I asked them to help me print some personal cards for Picnic, that way I could experience the printing for myself and learn a little bit about types. The result: an amazing late night printing session with great company and conversation, lots of pizza, lots of typographic learning, but most importantly: lots of happiness!

Aquí seleccionando las tipografías y armando la frase que quería imprimir:

Con esta plaquita calculamos qué espacio nos ocupa el texto en la tarjeta:
With this metal plate we measure the area the types are going to take on the card:

Luego hay que montar las tipos con los espacios, para esta no teníamos entonces los hicimos con cartón paja:
Then we had to align it with spaces, since there were no metal spaces for this specific type, we built them with cardboard.

Los espacios siempre deben ser un poco más bajitos que las tipos para que no marquen el papel con el golpe:
Spaces need to be a bit shorter than the types so they don’t hit the paper when the press is working on it:

Lista la frase, ahora la fijamos al marco con placas y apretamos con este cosito:
Once the words were ready we fixed them to the frame:

Y queda así: Todo esto es medido con regla para que la frase quede justo en el punto en donde la prensa golpea la tarjetita.
All of this takes measurements everywhere so the types are exactly aligned where the press hits the paper.

Luego con las guías cuadramos la tarjeta para que quede derecha y centrada:
Then the alignmento of the card is done with this little guides to help us keep it in place:

Ya cuando tuvimos la máquina cuadrada, pasamos a entintarla, una de mis partes favoritas porque es sólo ponerle unas pinticas y ella sola hace todo el trabajo cuando uno hala la palanca y la tinta queda parejita!
Then we have to place the ink on the machine which is really cool, because by pulling on the lever the machine does everything by itself and the ink is spreaded in an even unclogged way!

Los rodillos esparcen la tinta uniformemente sobre la pieza circular que es la que entinta los rodillos, que son los que entintan las tipografías que están en el soporte, así:

Se hacen un par de pruebitas para comprobar la alineación del texto:

Y ahora a halar palanca!
It’s lever time!!!

La segunda parte es la segunda tinta, hay que repetir el proceso pero teniendo en cuenta el texto que ya está impreso en la tarjeta, entonces hay que medir con precisión para no irse a montar encima:
Step 2 is the second ink color, it’s basically the same only now we had to be extra accurate with the measurements to make sure the words and color wouldn’t overlap.

Despite the fact that I equally love Lanvin and Reggaeton I have to say that this campaign is sooo tacky…I normally publish things I love but after seeing this I couldn’t remain silent…Nothing matches!!! the music, the super european models and their silly dancing, the ultra sophisticated clothes and location….what happened people??? If you want to feature Pitbull as your music campaign, get two Latin mamas and do some coherent styling!!!!

What do you guys think? Am I right???
