Siendo fotógrafo se puede experimentar todo tipo de situaciones a la hora de ir a trabajar como: frío extremo, calor insoportable, modelos que no tienen ni idea de lo que hacen y todo tipo de circunstancias imaginables. Todos estos contratiempos parecen perder importancia cuando se encuentran trabajos como el de Zena Holloway quién además de ser fotógrafa y tener que enfrentarse y resolver todas estos imprevistos y dificultades, debe hacerlo BAJO EL AGUA!
Zena se ha sentido a gusto en el agua desde que empezó a bucear, y aprendió todo lo que este medio tenía para enseñarle durante los dos años que fue instructora de buceo. La parte de la fotografía la aprendió sola, leyendo y estudiando por su cuenta, y una vez tuvo eso resuelto nada tuvo más sentido que reunir sus dos pasiones en un hermoso resultado sus fotografías subacuáticas.
Las imágenes de Zena Holloway no sólo son exquisitas por sus vivos colores o porque son hechas bajo el agua, sino porque además reflejan una capacidad inaudita para dirigir a sus modelos (aún sin poder hablarles) y un conocimiento absoluto del agua y de la forma en que la luz y el cuerpo humano interactúan con ella.
Creo que esto queda mucho más claro leyendo sus propias palabras: “Me gusta pensar que uso el agua para crear imágenes únicas e interesantes. Pienso que a veces el agua actúa como una barrera física y mental para muchas personas; las personas que trabajamos en el agua disfrutamos de la libertad de la ausencia de peso y del desafío que representa un nuevo ambiente. Por otro lado, es común que las personas que no trabajan en el agua se asombren ante lo que se puede conseguir. Entender cómo funciona el cuerpo en el agua es un aspecto muy importante para lo que hago, y pienso que mi entrenamiento como instructora de buceo fue el mejor entrenamiento que pude tener para llegar a manejar modelos y celebridades nerviosas bajo el agua.”

As a photographer you can find yourself experiencing all kinds of circumstances on your day to day work, like dealing with extreme cold, or unbearable heat, or models who don’t have a clue, well, basically anything can happen. But all of this seems pretty insignificant when you come accross images like Zena Holloways’, who, besides being a photographer and having to deal with this kind of problems on a day to day basis, has to do it UNDER WATER!
Zena has felt at home underwater since she started diving and she learned all there was to know about water during the years she worked as a diving instructor and an underwater videographer. The photography part came later, she’s a self taught photographer who learned all about the trade by investigating by herself, and when the tame came to take pictures it made perfect sense that she did it where she spent most of her time: under water.
Zena’s images are exquisite, not only because of their gorgeous use of color and of their being shot underwater, but also because they show an astounding ability for firecting models (even if she can’t speak to them) and an absolute knowledge of water and of the way light and the human body interact with it. I think she makes this point much clearer than I do when she says: “I like to think that I use water to create unique and interesting imagery. I find the water acts like a physical and mental boundary for a lot of people. Those that can work in water enjoy the freedom of weightlessness and the challenge of a new environment and those that can’t are often in complete awe at what can be achieved. Understanding how to manage people in water is a large part of what I do and I think my background as a diving instructor has been the best training I could have had to prepare for working with nervous models and celebrities. “

En internet se encuentran todo tipo de cosas: bonitas, feas, interesantes, aburridas, estúpidas, inteligentes, etc. Pero muy pocas veces se encuentra uno páginas tan deliciosas como la del Fotógrafo Sacha Maric. La primera vez que entré a su página quedé hipnotizada por la delicadeza de sus imágenes y la sencillez con que tan facilmente nos recuerda que hay belleza en este mundo, y que está en todos lados!
Sacha estudió en el Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design en Londres, una de las instituciones más prestigiosas del mundo en el área de arte y diseño, pero creo que en estas cosas o se tiene o no se tiene y por más alta educación que haya de por medio si no se tiene, no se logra sacar. Y Sacha si que lo tiene!!!! lo tiene para él y para dar y convidar, es incríble ver tanto talento en una sola persona porque no sólo son hermosas sus imágenes de moda, sino que además te deja boquiabierto con su portafolio personal, sus imágenes de documentarismo y sus sutiles videos.
Lo que más me gusta de tener este blog es precisamente cuando me encuentro con trabajos como el de Sacha, que, sencillamente, me dejan sin palabras y me quitan el aliento.

There are all kinds of stuff on the Internet: pretty stuff, ugly stuff, interesting stuff, boring stuff, stupid stuff, clever stuff, etc. But it’s very rare when you find websites as delicious as Photographer Sacha Maric’s. The first time I came upon his website I was hipnotized by the gentleness of his images and by the simplicity with which he reminds us that there’s beauty in the world, and that it’s all around us!
Sacha graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, one of the most prestigious institutions in the Design/Art area, but I personally think that for these kind of things you either have it or you don’t, even with the best education, if you don’t have what it takes, then you simply can’t get the same outstanding results. And Sacha most definately has it, he has enough of “it” for himself and for many many others. It’s really amazing to find so much talent in one single person because not only his fashion photography is gorgeous, but he also leaves you dumbfounded with his personal work, his documentary pictures and his subtle, “whisper like” videos.
One of my favorite things about having this blog is precisely when I come uppon characters such as Sacha, who simply leave me speechless and take my breath away.

Escribir sobre cosas que me gustan siempre es fácil y divertido, pero cuando se trata de una persona que no sólo quiero montones, sino que además admiro aún más de lo que la quiero creo que me puedo parcializar un poco y deshacerme en elogios y palabras bonitas. Por eso en este post mi impronta será mínima, voy a dejar que ustedes miren el trabajo de Cristina, lean cómo ella lo explica y define, y decidan si, cómo yo, la quieren con loca pasión:
“Me obsesiona el color, me obsesiona lo que me pasa en el estomago cuando siento que un tono necesita un tris mas de amarillo o unas gotitas de negro….. es algo que aprendí trabajando con moda, porque la escuela de gráfico nunca me lo enseñó. Es la sutileza, la intuicion en su maxima expresion, la personalidad que le aporta una gama u otra. Totalmente intuitivo y poco racional.
Amo la tipografía, es mi mejor aliada, la que me ayuda a diferenciar un proyecto en su totalidad y le dedico un altísimo porcentaje de mi tiempo, (de 2 a 3 horas por proyecto) solo a escoger el type ideal.
Mi reto diaro es aportar la textura, tacto, tridimensionalidad y sensibilidad a los impresos, algo tan propio de las telas. Amo los textiles por se convierten en gráficas que puedo tocar y sentir y trato de hacer lo mismo con el papel aportándole acabados terminaciones etc….. AMO TOCAR y sentir algo.
Y como estudio básicamente lo que pretendo es ser un instrumento para todo el que tenga la necesidad de comunicar algo. Por dificil que me resulte, amo tener que ser recargada ochentera un dia, otros la mas minimalista y formal, otros estudiar el constructivismo ruso, otros los empaques vintage de los 20….. todo este viaje sólo para hacer el sueño de mi cliente realidad, creo que eso es lo que diferencia a Wallnut Studio: mi capacidad de escuchar, y entender el universo del otro por un ratito. No me interesa imponer mi estética sobre todos pues de ser asi quedarian igualitos, y todos serian blanco negro gris y color piel jejejeje.”

It’s always fun and easy to write about stuff that I like, but when it comes to writing about a person who not only I love soooo much but I also admire her more than I can say, I think I can be a bit partial and write longs paragraphs of compliments and beautiful words. That’s why in this post my imprint will be minimal, I’m just going to let you look at Cristina’s work and read how she explains and defines it, and decide if, like me, you love her passionately:
“I’m obsessed by color, I’m obsessed by the thing that happens in my stomach when I feel that a tone needs a bit more yellow or a few drops of black…This is something that I learned working in fashion, graphic school never taught me that. I’m talking about the subtleness, intuition in it’s purest form, the personality that each color range brings with it. Totally intuitive and unrational.
I love type, it’s my best ally, the one that helps me differentiate between projects and I dedicate a large amount of time (2 -3 hours per project) to choosing the ideal type.
My daily challenge is to bring texture, tact, tridimensionality and sensibility to print, something so usually natural to fabrics. I love fabrics because they turn into graphic pieces that I can touch and feel, and I try to accomplish this with paper as well by adding finishings, textures, etc… I LOVE TO TOUCH and feel something.
As a Studio, what Wallnut is basically about is being an instrument for anyone who feels the need to communicate something. As hard as it may be, I love having to be 80´s overelaborate one day, formal and minimalist on the next day, study russian constructivism on the next day, and vintage 1920’s packages on the next day… all this journey only to make my client’s dream come true. I think that’s what sets Wallnut Studio appart: my ability to really listen, to understand the client’s universe for a little while. I’m really not that interested in labeling everybody with my aesthethic preferences because then they would all look alike, pretty much black, white and skin tone. hahahahaha”

Siempre he pensado que me hice fotógrafa porque no se dibujar, fue una salida fácil a un problema genéticamente imposible de resolver porque a pesar de que mi papá es arquitecto y uno de mis hermanos artista plástico, parece que no heredé ninguna de sus cualidades dibujísticas…Por esta razón siempre me he maravillado ante las personas que dibujan, y que dibujan bien, el tipo de personajes que se sientan en un café con una servilleta de papel y se ponen a “hacer garabatos” o lo que ellos consideran garabatos que terminan siendo algo que yo ni con un stencil podría hacer!!! (me pasa con varios amigos, mi hermano, mi esposo….en fin)
A Merrilee Liddiard la conocí porque JF (mi esposo) encontró en algunas de sus errantes expediciones bloguisticas, una fiesta que hizo ella para su hijo en su cumpleaños número 3, la fiesta tenía como tema Peter Pan (otro de mis libros favoritos, pasé muchos años con miedo a decir “no creo en las hadas”, en realidad todavía me da miedo..rápido! aplaudan!) y fue amor a primera vista, sólo por esta fiesta y por la forma en que la encaró, quedé enganchada, y el enganche aumentó aún más cuando vi sus ilustraciones.
Mer es ilustradora de portadas para libros de jóvenes adultos desde hace 6 años y tiene un par de ilustraciones de libros de niños: “Princess Peepers” y “Billy and Milly, Short and Silly”. Además tiene una deliciosa tiendita en Etsy en dónde vende ilustraciones customizadas para parejas, entre muchas otras cosas bonitas, y tengo que decir que estas son mis favoritas, hay algo que hace que me quede mirándolas, no se si son las finas líneas de los contornos, los sutiles colores, las mejillas rosadas acompañandas de una nariz diminuta generalmente con tonos rosados también, los ojos grandes con cejas definidas, o el pelo que cae como si fuera compacto y que me hace pensar en un personaje de El Manantial de Ayn Rand, así me imagino a Dominique Francon, pura elegancia y líneas finas.
Espero que les guste tanto el trabajo de Mer como a mí, me declaro fan, no sólo de sus ilustraciones, sino de sus brillantes ideas, de sus increíbles hallazgos en internet, de su forma de ser mamá, en fin…fan.

I’ve always thought that I became a photographer because I can’t draw, it was an easy way out for a problem that’s genetically impossible to solve, because even though my dad is an architect, and one of my brothers is an artist, I seem to have inherited none of their “drawistic” abilities whatsoever…For this particular reason I have always admired people who draw, and who draw well, the kind of people that sit in a cafe with a paper knapking and start “scribbling” or what they consider to be scribbling that turns out to be something that I couldn’t dream of doing even with the aid of a stencil!!! (this happens to me constantly with friends, my husband, my brother…..)
I found Merrilee Liddiard because JF (my husband) in one of his neverending, every-possible-thing-finding blog expeditions, found that she made a birthday party for her 3 year old son based on Peter Pan (another favorite book, I was scared of saying “I don’t believe in fairies” for years…actually I still am…. quick! clap clap) and it was love at first sight for me, I was hooked (accurate choice of words), just because of the way she thought and saw through this party, but I was even more hooked when I saw her illustrations.
Mer has been a book cover illustrator for 6 years, doing mostly young adults books and two children’s books: “Princess Peepers” and “Billy and Milly, Short and Silly”. She also has a very delicious Etsy shop in which she sells, among other beautiful things, customized couples illustrations, and I have to say these are my favorites, there’s something in her line of work that just makes me stare at it for a looooong time. Maybe it’s fine lines of the outlines, the subtle coloring, the pink cheeks that come with the trade mark pinkish nose and forehead, the big eyes with traced eyebrows, or the hair the falls like a compact unit and that makes me think of a character in Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead, Dominique Francon, sheer elegance and fine lines.
I hope you guys like Mer’s work as much as I do, I proclaim myself a fan, not just of her illustrations, but also of her brilliant ideas, of her incredible internet findings and inspiration, of her parenting…just…a fan.
