Una notica corta para contarles a los que no lo saben que Liniers es uno de los mejores humoristas gráficos del universo, y que hoy particularmente me encantó su tira de Macanudo que publica diariamente en el periódico La Nación de Argentina.
A short note to let you guys know that I think Liniers is one of the best graphic humorists in the universe, and that I particulary loved today’s comic strip. You can check out his daily “Macanudo” in the argentinian newspaper La Nacion’s website.

La muy talentosa y muy admirada Catalina Estrada hizo un mini web tour de su exposición “Desarmando Sueños” en la Galería Iguapop de Barcelona, la expo habla sobre los niños víctimas del conflicto armado de Colombia. Y parte de lo recogido con las ventas será donado a una organización que trabaja con estos niños.
Para los que estamos lejos y somos seguidores de esta ilustradora colombiana es un sueño hecho realidad ver sus creaciones al ritmo de la dulce música de otro talento colombiano: The sound of Lucrecia.
The very talented and very admired Catalina Estrada posted a mini web tour of her latest exhibition “Desarmando Sueños” (Disarming Dreams) at Iguapop Gallery in Barcelona, the expo deals with the subject of colombian children victims of our country’s armed conflict, and part of the money raised from the sales will be donated to a non profit organization that works with these children.
For those of us who are far away from Barcelona and are big fans of this colombian illustrator, it’s a dream come true to be able to see her creations joined by the sweet music of The sound of Lucrecia another colombian talent.

Amo la forma en que el diseñador británico Peter Jensen presentó su colección crucero.Basado en la foto de las trillizas de Diane Arbus, le pidió a la telentosísima Charlotte Mann que dibujara una habitación para las trillizas, todas al mejor estilo de Mann en blanco y negro. La pequeña habitación tenía una puerta por donde entraban las modelos que mostraban la colección al público.
Cualquier cosa que reúna moda, buena ilustración, ropa bonita de colores brillantes y Diane Arbus tiene que ser buena.
I love the way british designer Peter Jensen presented his resort collection. Based on Diane Arbu’s picture of the triplets, he asked the very talented Charlotte Mann to draw the setting of the triplet’s room. The little room had a door through which the models came presenting the garments of the collection.
Fasion, great illustration, beautiful colorful clothing and Diane Arbus…definately count me in!

Siempre he pensado que me hice fotógrafa porque no se dibujar, fue una salida fácil a un problema genéticamente imposible de resolver porque a pesar de que mi papá es arquitecto y uno de mis hermanos artista plástico, parece que no heredé ninguna de sus cualidades dibujísticas…Por esta razón siempre me he maravillado ante las personas que dibujan, y que dibujan bien, el tipo de personajes que se sientan en un café con una servilleta de papel y se ponen a “hacer garabatos” o lo que ellos consideran garabatos que terminan siendo algo que yo ni con un stencil podría hacer!!! (me pasa con varios amigos, mi hermano, mi esposo….en fin)
A Merrilee Liddiard la conocí porque JF (mi esposo) encontró en algunas de sus errantes expediciones bloguisticas, una fiesta que hizo ella para su hijo en su cumpleaños número 3, la fiesta tenía como tema Peter Pan (otro de mis libros favoritos, pasé muchos años con miedo a decir “no creo en las hadas”, en realidad todavía me da miedo..rápido! aplaudan!) y fue amor a primera vista, sólo por esta fiesta y por la forma en que la encaró, quedé enganchada, y el enganche aumentó aún más cuando vi sus ilustraciones.
Mer es ilustradora de portadas para libros de jóvenes adultos desde hace 6 años y tiene un par de ilustraciones de libros de niños: “Princess Peepers” y “Billy and Milly, Short and Silly”. Además tiene una deliciosa tiendita en Etsy en dónde vende ilustraciones customizadas para parejas, entre muchas otras cosas bonitas, y tengo que decir que estas son mis favoritas, hay algo que hace que me quede mirándolas, no se si son las finas líneas de los contornos, los sutiles colores, las mejillas rosadas acompañandas de una nariz diminuta generalmente con tonos rosados también, los ojos grandes con cejas definidas, o el pelo que cae como si fuera compacto y que me hace pensar en un personaje de El Manantial de Ayn Rand, así me imagino a Dominique Francon, pura elegancia y líneas finas.
Espero que les guste tanto el trabajo de Mer como a mí, me declaro fan, no sólo de sus ilustraciones, sino de sus brillantes ideas, de sus increíbles hallazgos en internet, de su forma de ser mamá, en fin…fan.

I’ve always thought that I became a photographer because I can’t draw, it was an easy way out for a problem that’s genetically impossible to solve, because even though my dad is an architect, and one of my brothers is an artist, I seem to have inherited none of their “drawistic” abilities whatsoever…For this particular reason I have always admired people who draw, and who draw well, the kind of people that sit in a cafe with a paper knapking and start “scribbling” or what they consider to be scribbling that turns out to be something that I couldn’t dream of doing even with the aid of a stencil!!! (this happens to me constantly with friends, my husband, my brother…..)
I found Merrilee Liddiard because JF (my husband) in one of his neverending, every-possible-thing-finding blog expeditions, found that she made a birthday party for her 3 year old son based on Peter Pan (another favorite book, I was scared of saying “I don’t believe in fairies” for years…actually I still am…. quick! clap clap) and it was love at first sight for me, I was hooked (accurate choice of words), just because of the way she thought and saw through this party, but I was even more hooked when I saw her illustrations.
Mer has been a book cover illustrator for 6 years, doing mostly young adults books and two children’s books: “Princess Peepers” and “Billy and Milly, Short and Silly”. She also has a very delicious Etsy shop in which she sells, among other beautiful things, customized couples illustrations, and I have to say these are my favorites, there’s something in her line of work that just makes me stare at it for a looooong time. Maybe it’s fine lines of the outlines, the subtle coloring, the pink cheeks that come with the trade mark pinkish nose and forehead, the big eyes with traced eyebrows, or the hair the falls like a compact unit and that makes me think of a character in Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead, Dominique Francon, sheer elegance and fine lines.
I hope you guys like Mer’s work as much as I do, I proclaim myself a fan, not just of her illustrations, but also of her brilliant ideas, of her incredible internet findings and inspiration, of her parenting…just…a fan.

No hay que ser un crítico de arte para apreciar las ilustraciones de Leo Espinosa, ni hay que ser muy perceptivo para darse cuenta de que es una persona increíble cuando se lo conoce personalmente. Lo que si hay que ser es afortunado para tener una oportunidad como la que tuve yo en Boston hace un par de meses y me considero definitivamente muy afortunada de haber podido conocer la ciudad con un guia de este calibre. Porque cuando se conoce a Leo se entiende mejor su trabajo, se entiende que por debajo de los conejitos y animalejos semi roedores, hay un alma hermosa, un constante gozo de cada cosa chiquita que trae la vida cotidiana, una sensibilidad abrumadora y uno de los corazones mejor puestos que he tenido la oportunidad de conocer.
Conozco a alguien que siempre dice “cuando yo sea niño quiero ser como Leo” y creo que nada puede definir mejor lo que despierta su trabajo en el espectador: es simplemente como ser chiquito…tan….facil…tan facil de gozar, tan facil de hacer reir, tan facil de sentir calorcito en el alma cuando se lo mira, tan facil de decir WOW!. Y creo que es inclusive más facil entenderlo cuando se lee lo que él mismo escribió cuando le dije que me mandara algo sobre sus ilustraciones y recibí esta perlita:
“Dibujar: Una ventana para ver mi alma de cerca.
Escribir: Una puerta.
Diseñar: Lo que hago cuando estoy suficientemente feliz con la ventana cerrada.
Soñar: Mi vida.
Reir: El oxígeno.
Satisfacer: Empezar de cero cada día.
Llorar: Reir al revés.
Llevo dibujando desde Ultraman y El Zorro, diseñando menos tiempo del que vengo riendo o llorando. Riendo o llorando en Bogotá, Nueva York, Barcelona y Boston. Llevo soñando la vida entera y el sueño es poder seguir dibujando por el resto de la misma. Me inspira el amor. El amor y el punk rock. El amor y las bicicletas. El amor y el cine. El amor y los cómics.
Quiero permanecer insatisfecho en la continua busqueda de mi voz como artista para poder convertirme algún día en artista.”
Aqui les queda entonces un pedacito de la vida de Leo que seguramente los va a hacer sonreir tantas veces como a mí.

You don’t have to be an art critic to appreciate Leo Espinosa’s illustrations, or a very perceptive person to notice the amazing guy he is when you meet him face to face.
What you have to be is lucky, like I was a couple of months ago when I got the chance to meet him in Boston and was toured around the city by this very atypical and interesting guide. The thing about meeting Leo is that you get to understand his work in a different level, you get to understand that behind the bunnies and weird rodent like creatures there’s a beautiful soul, a constant enjoyment of every single tiny thing that the ordinary life brings, an overwhelming sensibility and one of the best hearts I’ve had the chance to come across.
I know someone who says “when I’m a kid, I wish I could be like Leo”, and I think that no phrase coul define in a better way what a viewer feels while looking at his work: it’s just so.. like being a kid…so easy….so easy to enjoy, so easy to make you laugh, so easy to make you feel a kind of warmth in your soul, so easy to make you go WOW! and it’s even easier to understand it when you get to read what he wrote about himself and his work:
“To draw: A window to take a closer look at my soul.
To write: A door.
To design: What I do when I’m happy enough with a closed window.
To dream: My life.
To laugh: Oxygen.
To satisfy: To start each day from scratch.
To cry: To laugh backwards.
I’ve been drawing since Ultraman and Zorro, I’ve been designing for a shorter time than I’ve been laughing or crying. Laughing or crying in Bogotá, New York, Barcelona and Boston. I’ve been dreaming my entire life and the dream is to be able to draw for the rest of such a life. I’m inspired by love. Love and punk rock. Love and bicycles. Love and the movies. Love and comics.
I would like to remain unsatisfied in the continuous search of my voice as an artist so I can one day become an artist”

Casi todas las cosas bonitas e interesantes del mundo son hechas con amor, con afecto, con pasión o con todos estos mezclados….por eso no fue una sorpresa para mí cuando le pedí a Monica que escribiera un pequeño texto sobre sus ilustraciones para Picnic, y recibí en mi email esto:
“Las imagenes para mi son como un modo de querer..es como darle un abrazo a algo que normalmente no se le puede dar (a un gesto, a un extraño, a un lugar, a una situación), o de prolongar ese “no se que” que tienen ciertas cosas en determinados momentos. Dibujar da mas tiempo para contemplar (que a veces la rapidez con que vivimos no permite) y deja casi que tocar lo que se ve…es un acto muy afectivo, y por eso es que creo que dibujar da felicidad. Es como un proceso muy bonito y tranquilo de digerir la propia vida, todo lo que en ella va apareciendo o sucediendo, de una manera además muy íntima y afectiva.”
Pues Monica entonces va por el mundo abrazando y contemplando por largo tiempo todo tipo de sujetos: amigos, personajes anónimos en el tren, señores en la ciudad acompañados de una niebla que de alguna forma es visible/invisible, animales, objetos olvidados, paisajes, edificios, y mi favorito: un chico que viaja en el tren leyendo, del que Monica dice que confía en él sólo por la forma en que sostiene su libro. Todos marcados sutilmente por las herramientas y las técnicas que los hacen inconfundiblemente de ella, los fondos color pasteles, los tonos de grises, las texturas delicadas y los pequeños textos que acompañan estos pedazos de su vida y que dejan entrever una persona con una sensibilidad sobrecogedora y un talento inmenso.
Creo que no se debe decir mucho más del talento de esta increíble chica, que además de ilustraciones hace hermosísimas fotos para el que quiera curiosear, los dejo entonces con un consejito que ella misma da: “definitivamente lo más importante de todo este cuento es estar realmente conectado a lo que hacemos..trabajar a partir de motivaciones muy propias, cosas que de verdad nos toquen por quién sabe que razón, y si ya despues los resultados le gustan a otros tambien mucho mejor, porque se comparte. :)“

Almost every beautyful or interesting thing that one comes across in life comes from love, or affection, or passion, or all of these mixed together….that’s why I wasn’t surprised when I asked Monica to write a short text about her illustrations for Picnic and recieved this on my email:
“Images for me are like a way of loving….they are like giving a hug to something to which you can’t normally give one (a gesture, a stranger, a place, a situation), or a way to prolong that unknown feeling that certain things have in certain moments. Drawing allows me to take more time to contemplate things (which is often not possible at the speed we live in) and almost allows me to touch what I see…it’s a very affective action, and that is why I believe that drawing brings happiness. It’s a very beautyful and peaceful process of digesting your own life and all the stuff that happens or shows up in it, in a very intimate and affectionate way.“
So, Monica lives her life hugging and contemplating all kinds of subjects: friends, anonimous characters in the train, men in cities with a fog for background that is somehow visible/invisible, animals, forgotten objects, landscapes, buildings, and my personal favorite: a guy reading in a train whom Monica says she trusts “just by the way he holds his book”. All of them subtly branded by the tools and techniques which make them unmistakable her own: pastel colour backgrounds, gray tones, delicate textures and tiny texts that explain these pieces of her life and that allow us to make out a person with an ovewhelming sensibility and an enormous talent.
I think there’s no need to say anything else about this incredible girl, who also takes amazing pictures if any of you guys wants to browse through her flickr. I leave you then with a tiny piece of advice she wrote: “the most important thing in this trade is to be really conected to what we do…to work from motivations that come from deep within us, stuff that really touches us for who knows what reason. And if after that other people like the results, then it’s even better because we get to share it. :)”
